Why Course Security is necessary?

MIKA Kume had a chance of topping her age group at the Aviva Ironman 70.3 Singapore triathlon yesterday, but her dream was punctured by what appears to be a deliberate act of sabotage: Someone had strewn thumb tacks along the bike route of the race.

At least four bikes were nailed, The Straits Times understands. Elvia Suryadi, 32, had to wheel her bike for 80 minutes barefoot, as she did not have a spare tyre with her.

'I wanted to cry each step of the way,' said the lecturer, who had to take off her cycling shoes to walk from the Singapore Flyer to East Coast Park.

Marina Boulevard, Sunday, June 8, 2008 – George Lawson (1:36:09) and Monica Torres (1:51:51) were the fastest duathletes at the City Duathlon but the post-race conversations were centred on the confusion arising from the shortened bike leg.

Riders were expecting to cover five loops of 8km each but were left scratching their heads when their speedometers indicated only 20km at the end of their bike leg. It seems a failure in marshalling and route set-up led to the mistake.

Race Escort – Leader in race to escort our elites to ensure that they have a safe and uninterrupted race. This will prevent them from getting out of course or led astray.

Marshal – Specially trained by Maktab Teknik PDRM to maintain a high level of safety and integrity in our duty of course and also ensure that it is safe and secure for the event to proceed.

Motorcycle Commissaire – Certified under Union Cycliste Internationale - Singapore Amateur Cycling Association to be official commissaire in cycling events to task on draft busting patrol and course patrolling for safety and security purposes.

Safety Assessor – Assess and eliminate the lapse in safety and security in the race course during the planning phrase.

Evacuation Responder – Respond fast and safe to beef up the medical reponse downtime when an emergency or crisis situation arise and provides transport to doctor or nurse where emergency vehicles are inaccessible.

Support Command – Supports the road race with Safety Car or even Lead Cyclist.

Jet-Ski Marshal - Perform safety, security and rescue operations out in the open sea for race events which require a swim category. -Latest-
